July 02, 2020

Many sites made maps for cumulative cases of COVID-19. Though the recovered cases might be underestimated, it is more crucial to know how many people are currently infected than the accumulative cases. Data source: 1Point3Acres

Estimating Canopy Height using LiDAR Point Clouds

June 30, 2019

Canopy height of a forest is telling of the health of the forest ecosystem, an indicator of forest biomass and species diversity. Among the most diverse, the tropical Maya forest is under conservation threat. Located around 17 degrees north, we use the El Pilar Lidar point cloud to analyze the height of the forest canopy across the entire 20 km2 of the El Pilar Archaeological Reserve for Flora and Fauna in Belize and Guatemala. We focus on three distinct ancient settlement areas within the reserve: the Northeast Corozal, Northwestern Amatal and Core El Pilar areas to gain an understanding of the variations in canopy height. With a detailed base of canopy height and a model influences of terrain aspect, we derive from Lidar data to address impacts.

Urbanization and its Effect on Surrounding Environment

June 15, 2019

In the past decades, China has experienced massive economic growth and urban development. Changes in urban land cover, vegetation healthiness, and temperature distribution are crucial indices to understand the urbanization effects on the surrounding environment (Zhu et al., 2018). We select Beijing and Lanzhou in China as our study objects.

A Ming Dynasty Map -- Measuring the Distortion between An Old map and A New Map

February 01, 2018

This is a Ming Dynasty map created in 1547. In that period of time, Spain, England and other European countries start to travel overseas. Thus we can find maps written in Spanish and English during the sailing era. However, those maps all show the world in Western perspectives. What is the world like in Non-Western people's eyes?
